In addition to teaching privately, Ms. Mahadevi is the conductor for the young children at Star Valley Children’s Choir (SVCC) in Millbrae and San Jose. She began directing choirs in 1999 and worked as a music teacher in public and private schools in San Jose and Oakland. She was also Music Director of a Unity Church in Campbell.
As a member of the Music Teacher’s Association of California (MTAC), her students can participate in the Certificate of Merit (CM) program, and as a Royal Conservatory Certified Teacher, she can also help students through their Music Development Program as well. Both of these programs are excellent ways for students to feel a sense of accomplishment and track their progress in either voice or piano.
Since 2010, she has been teaching music theory to children and adults using Kodaly’s philosophy. She is currently working on incorporating Kodaly’s concepts into a new method for piano which includes singing games and activities with a rhythmic and/or melodic focus so students can actually experience musical elements kinesthetically, which facilitates music literacy: ear training, reading and writing skills.
Ms. Mahadevi received a Bachelor of Music with an Emphasis in Voice Performance from the conservatory program at California State University at Los Angeles where she graduated with Honor. In 2015 she received a Master’s in Music Education with a Kodaly Emphasis from Holy Names University in Oakland. As a Kodaly-influenced teacher, she has worked for a variety of schools and organizations such as St. Lawrence O’Toole Elementary School, Progressions, which is an El Sistema related project as part of the San Jose Jazz Society, Vivace Children’s Chorus, and the Castro Valley School of Music.
She is a member of the Organization of Kodaly Educators (OAKE), Northern California Association of Kodaly Educators (NCAKE), Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC), and a Royal Conservatory Certified Teacher.
